our story

Who We Are

Our church is about people:  people serving, people learning,
people enjoying each other, people at work and worship,
people growing together, people taking care of each other.

Our church is about change,
starting with ourselves
on the path to become more like Jesus.
Along the way we strive for positive change in our community
through local missions and outreach service projects,
and in our world through national and international
disaster relief and missionary giving.

But mostly our church is about Jesus, doing all things in His name.
The Church is His body, and we are members.
We pray and work for His kingdom to further come
and His will to be further done on earth.

Identity Statement

We are Disciples of Christ,
a movement for wholeness
in a fragmented world.
As part of the one body of Christ,
we welcome all to the Lord's Table
as God has welcomed us.

History & Governance

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Was Founded in the Early 1800s in the United States.

The founders (Thomas Campbell, Alexander Campbell, Barton W. Stone, Walter Scott, and Preston Taylor), pioneers in the religious reformation of the 19th century, envisioned a united church of Jesus Christ modeled on the New Testament.  The engraving to the right was done by J.C. Buttre and designed by J.D.C. McFarland. It is inscribed with, "Where the Scriptures speak, we speak. Where the Scriptures are silent, we are silent."

We structure our community around the Biblical idea of covenant, emphasizing not obedience to human authority but accountability to one another because of our shared belief in Christ.

Today our congregations are self-governing, calling their own leadership. Worship services may be formal or informal, and include women and men in leadership. Open discussion of issues is encouraged and diversity of opinion is common.

The work of the church is carried out in three expressions--congregation, regions, and general ministries--in covenant with one another. General ministries specialize in particular forms of ministry from advocacy to financial resources, programming to care for the marginalized.
